Environment protection

The Autostrada A1 runs through areas which are unique and varied in terms of natural environment and landscape elements and that are highly sensitive to any disturbances.  Despite the fact that motorways are rather environmentally friendly means of transport, the realization of large-scale infrastructure projects, like the A1, has a significant impact on the environment. It becomes, thus, essential for the motorway providers to pay close attention to both assessing and minimizing the resulting impact.

During the design stage an intensive environmental research in collaboration with experts was conducted in order to develop eco-friendly technologies and solutions. We cooperated with local and national institutions as well as public and private organisations to protect and enhance the cultural, historical and natural heritage of the areas through which the motorway passes.

Throughout the construction, a number of solutions have been devised to mitigate and minimise any negative impact the project. The landscape of all the affected areas is to be restored and any necessary remedial measures are to be taken to secure an adequate integration of the motorway into the environment. In order to limit the spreading of air pollutants, 15 meter wide belts of greenery will be planted along the sections crossing areas valuable in terms of wildlife and selected vegetation. In total, over 100 thousand trees, bushes and ground shrubbery will be planted along the Autostrada A1 corridor. Built-up areas will be screened with noise barriers. Large game and special frog passages, especially in the river valleys, are to be secured. Sand filters and separators will be installed to protect the environment from the rainwater running off the motorway. Wherever the water cannot be directed to natural water courses, evaporation ponds are to be constructed.

In terms of operations, the main areas of focus are above all the reduction of the consumption of energy, the management of green spaces around motorways and developing ways of recycling materials in order to reduce waste as well as cutting the noise and air pollution generated by road traffic.

These and other mitigation measures, minimising a potential impact of the motorway both in the course of the motorway construction and later during the operation periods are designed to ensure optimum effectiveness. They present the most innovative approach towards environmental issues and preventative measures presently used to compensate and reduce the negative impact the road might have on the neighbouring areas and all components of the natural environment.
