The first and most important phase in the action entitled ‘Set the Example’ is over. In pursuance of the campaign, the general contractor held meetings and distributed reflective gadgets to all pupils of primary and junior secondary schools located in the neighbourhood of the A1 motorway construction site and the operated excavation pits. The contractor was assisted in holding the educational meetings by the Police officers who deal with prevention in the field of traffic on a daily basis.
The youngest are frequently highly aware of the traffic issues. Seeing photographs exemplifying different behaviours they know exactly which examples deserve reprimand, and which call for praise. They are well aware of the fact that wearing reflective elements is worth while. The theory, alas, falls far from practice. The scenario where the students tuck the reflective badges or vests received from various institutions or companies deep in their chest of drawers at home and keep them there is encountered far too frequently.
Let us remember that the duty of wearing reflective elements is stipulated in the law: it is the statutory obligation of each parent to equip the child (under 15) with a reflective piece of garment, if it is to walk along roads outside the built-up area.
Since 26 November, the general contractor’s Traffic Team has visited 31 outlets and held classes with 6700 pupils at more than 50 meetings. The smallest of the visited schools has 24 pupils (grades 0-3). The purpose of these actions is to attain the goal of having zero traffic accidents involving the pedestrians over the duration of the project.
